In 1981 aged 17, I started working as a runner at Studio Lambert, one of the busiest commercial production companies in London under the watchful eye of Director/Cameraman Roger Lambert: Roger’s enthusiasm and inclusive approach to making commercials made me realise very quickly that the camera department was where I saw my future - I was sent off to Samuelson Film Services, (a camera rental company) to spend 6 months learning the “gear” before returning to Studio Lambert to become the in-house clapper loader. In 1984 I went freelance working as a clapper loader and 16mm camera assistant on commercials and in the new and exciting world of music videos, working with many of the UK’s finest cameramen and crew.

By the early 90s I was working predominantly on features as a 1stAC, pulling focus on Steadicam and B Camera – films Included:  The Fifth Element (cam:Thierry Arbogast AFC), Rob Roy (cam: Roger Deakins BSC/ASC & Walter Lindenlaub BVK/ASC), Incognito (cam: Dennis Crossan BSC), The Jackal (cam: Walter Lindenlaub BKV/ACS), The Hunger – TV series (cam: John Mathieson BSC), Turn of the Screw (cam: Witold Stok BSC), Air America (cam: Roger Deakins BSC/ASC), Hidden Agenda (cam: Clive Tickner BSC), Restoration (cam: Oliver Stapleton BSC), plus many more on dailies. During this period I started shooting low budget music videos and short films and the like and in 1997 I put my tape measure away and picked up a light meter full time.

In the early years of lighting I cut my teeth in music videos and commercials and I found myself working a lot in India and Asia: Also over this period John Mathieson BSC gave me the opportunity to shoot 2nd Unit and operate B camera on a number of his films (Plunket & Macleane, Trauma and Stoned). In 2003, I was asked by one of my regular commercials directors to shoot his and my first feature, Hari Om (dir: Bharatbala Ganapathy). Hari Om is a charming and gentle love story that is develops on a road trip set in a auto rickshaw driving across Rajasthan, India. Hari Om premiered at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival and went on to win numerous awards at film festivals around the world:

After Hari Om came the low budget British film Cashback (dir: Sean Ellis), a visually rich black comedy that delves into beauty, art, love, memories, dreams, ladishness and freezing time: Cashback went on to do very well and gained international attention for its originality and its cinematography: I teamed up with Cashback director Sean Ellis a second time to make The Broken, a beautifully crafted and sophisticated psychological chiller that went on to receive much praise for its cinematography as well as winning the award for Best Cinematography at the prestigious Sitges International Film Festival.

Another psychological chiller/thriller came along next in the form of the Hindi language film, The Accident (dir: Abhijit Choudhury): The film is set in Goa and follows a couples’ mourning after the loss of their child and their resulting psychological breakdown – all in a distant and slightly strange homage to Don’t Look Now (dir: Nicolas Roeg).

My most recently released film is Last Passenger (dir: Omid Nooshin), an ambitious studio based suspense thriller set entirely on board a hijacked train: A technically challenging film that relied heavily on the use of multiple rear projection screens and physical effects combined with well thought out camerawork to achieve its goal: Last Passenger opened to much praise in cinemas in the US and UK.

My last film, The Hippopotamus (dir: John Jencks) is an adaptation of the novel by Stephen Fry of the same name. The Hippopotamus is a dark comedy about a disagreeable, washed up poet, played by Roger Allam, who finds himself investigating a series of unexplained miracles via the scenic route of whisky fuelled rants, country house parties, a smattering of incest and a hint of bestiality. The Hippopotamus was released across the UK in 2017.

In 2016 I was thrilled and incredibly excited to join Star Wars Episode VIII as an additional director of photography and camera operator on Main Unit - A dream come true!!!

In between films I am busy with commercials and in between commercials I like to cook and take photo’s and be with my family, splitting my time between London and the remoter parts of the Kent Coast.
